Climate change is having a significant impact on weather patterns around the world, including an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods. This phenomenon is caused by a combination of several factors that are closely related to climate change. One of the most striking is the increase in global temperatures, which leads to faster evaporation of water from the oceans and land surface. As the atmosphere contains more water vapor, heavy rains become more likely, increasing the risk of flooding in many parts of the world. Rising sea levels due to melting ice and thermal expansion during global warming have made coastal areas more vulnerable to flooding. Major cities such as Jakarta, Miami, and New Orleans are experiencing increasingly severe flooding, causing significant economic losses and threatening the lives of residents. Data shows that densely populated coastal areas could experience a doubling of flood risk every decade in the future. This is also exacerbated by rapid deforestation and urbanization. Deforestation reduces the soil’s ability to absorb water, while infrastructure development changes natural drainage, making it impossible for water to be stored properly. This creates ideal conditions for flash floods to occur, especially in areas that have never previously experienced such events. Additionally, shifts in global rainfall patterns contribute to the impact of flooding. Some regions are experiencing increased rainfall, while others are trapped in prolonged dry periods. This change causes an imbalance that can trigger sudden flooding when heavy rains come. Countries that have poor disaster mitigation infrastructure are more vulnerable to these natural disasters. Furthermore, climate shifts also increase the risk of flooding due to the possibility of stronger tropical storms. Research shows that stronger storms can produce more intense rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding. This has a direct impact on daily life, including agriculture, transportation, and public safety. Global adaptation and mitigation efforts are very important to overcome this impact. Investments in sustainable infrastructure, such as embankments and advanced drainage systems, are urgently needed to mitigate flood risks. Better spatial planning policies, protecting natural ecosystems, and increasing public awareness also play an important role in building resilience to increasingly frequent floods due to climate change. Thus, the impact of climate change on global flooding is not only an environmental issue, but also a social and economic challenge that requires collective action from around the world.
