A president is the person in charge, whether that’s of a republic, a company, a college or a fan club. In the United States, the Constitution defines presidential functions, powers and responsibilities. Presidents supervise the executive branch of federal government and enforce laws passed by Congress. They also appoint cabinet-level department officers and the Supreme Court, with Senate approval. In addition, they must “from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he or she shall judge necessary and expedient.”
As the head of one of the world’s largest militaries, the President has many opportunities to shape international relationships. They must be able to articulate their vision for the country and inspire others to support it, as well as make tough decisions when needed.
In addition to domestic and international issues, the President must understand Montclair State’s unique character and culture and be a champion for it. They must possess leadership traits that include open and honest communication, a team orientation, a willingness to take calculated risk and a desire to serve the University community.
The President must interact with a wide range of external constituencies, including the media, to generate resources and build Montclair State’s brand. They must have the diplomatic dexterity, political savvy, courage of convictions and exquisite judgment that are essential to superb leadership.
