How to Prepare for a Debate

Debate

Students explore controversial issues through debate. They research the topic and prepare arguments to present in a public forum, with the goal of advancing their position and persuading other participants to their side. Typically used in Speech and Social Studies classes, Debate can be applied to a wide range of topics and is a great way for students to practice argumentation skills and learn how to present a persuasive case.

Thorough Research

Researching a debate topic takes time and dedication. It is essential to locate reliable sources that offer different perspectives and support your position. It’s also important to collect a variety of information including facts, statistics, expert opinions, and real-life examples. When you have strong evidence to back your claims, your debate will be stronger and more convincing. You should also anticipate potential rebuttals to your points and address them preemptively.

Using Signposting

As you begin your argument, clearly state your main points or arguments so that your audience can follow your line of reasoning. This will help your audience anticipate what your next point will be and allow them to be better prepared for your counter-arguments.

During your debate, make sure to speak slowly and clearly. Remember, you are only allotted a certain amount of time to present your argument so use it wisely. Avoid logical fallacies such as straw man and ad hominem attacks, and stay focused on the topic at hand. Use your body language to communicate your message as well.
